She finally finished.
Build a display Elise, promote the store brand pop Elise. That is exactly what she did. It took her a good hour and a half of work time but it was finally done and it was amazing. She admired her work of art from every angle, nodding with satisfaction. This would do, she could only make it so big after all or the aisles would get congested.
She built a small castle out of pop cases. This had to be her best idea yet!
It was kind of disappointing that she couldn't climb in it, since it was too small and completely solid. Too bad though, it would have been a great place to hang out in during her breaks. Behind the milk in the fridge wasn't any fun anymore, she didn't like the cold as much as she thought she would. Ahh, well, she could find a new spot, the break room was a bit awkward for her. How long had she been working here now? Half a year? Wow, she knew next to nothing about her fellow employees. Elise preferred to have her breaks alone anyways.
With that job complete she began to wander her department, putting things back where they belonged. She preferred her area kind of tidy, the rest of the store was fair game. Would it kill them to at least place the products in the right aisle? Milk did not belong in the cereal aisle, as funny as that was. It was warm to the touch, and with a sigh she went and placed it in the back area of her department where other bad products went and marked it down.
When she came back out she wandered around aimlessly again, answering a few questions from customers. A great idea suddenly hit her and she hurried to the back room, grabbing napkins and tape. Elise grabbed two packs of plastic cups and taped the napkins to the top. Flags, the castle needed flags. She stood back, putting her hands on her hips and looking at it proudly.
“It's perfect!!”

Lili happened to be walking by when she noticed the massive structure of carbonated soft drinks. She was on her way to her next shift and stopped dead in her tracks, gazing in awe at the expertly crafted structure... no, that's a lie. Mostly she was just confused. Oh God, she didn't just use some of the cases, that was ALL of them. That was... that was going to cause some problems. Jenga, the supermarket version! Collapse the castle and lose the prize! And also pay for all of the broken cans. "Um.. Elise--" Lili inched her way in and stood next to the other girl, contemplating what she should say.
"Why did you even do this?" Lili asked, exasperated. "You used all the cases. No one's going to be able to grab a case without ruining the castle." If not from the top, then some idiot will grab from the bottom out of spite and it'll all crash down painfully. And messily. But what was Lili worrying about? This wasn't her department and it wouldn't be her mess to clean up. But she still couldn't help but be concerned for Elise and the future of her friend's job. "If someone breaks this you'll be in trouble!"
Whatever customers did wander by didn't dare to touch the display. It was too beautiful, too perfect... in fact, those that passed by again later came by with bottles, too reluctant to take cases from the fortress. "Yeah, see? They aren't even touching it!"

When Lili came by she expected the other girl to be amazed. It was a work of art after all, Castle Elise. She had even named it, after her of course. Well, she had the only castle, so technically she was ruler of the department right? Camping had some tents, and didn't they have a bouncy castle in the kids' section? Her competitors. Unfortunately it seemed her castle would have to go, which really bummed her out. All that hard work.
“I was hoping people would be smart enough to grab from the top, but I guess you can't count on that sort of thing.” Elise replied with a sigh. Really, in this day and age people couldn't figure out how to grab boxes from the top of the pile? It made perfect sense to her, too bad everyone wasn't as logical as her. Lili was right though, no one was touching it and the point was to sell the pop.
What else could she do then? The castle was her only good idea. Other stores that she saw on the internet had such great displays too, but wouldn't the same thing happen anyways if she built one of those? Wait a second, why was Lili even over here, wasn't her department at the other side of the store? She wasn't here to spy on her right? No, wouldn't the manager himself just come by instead?
Gardening had nice displays, and as much as she didn't like doing this, she needed a little advice. “Do you have any ideas? Most of mine are more structures like this.” Elise put her hands on her hips, dreading taking this thing apart after how long it took to put it together. “What are you doing over here anyways, on your break?”

Make no mistake, the effort was amazing! This wasn't something Lili could do in either of her departments. For one, Lars would kill her if she tried in the Gardening Center and two, puppies and kittens had a hard time staying in one place for very long, much less staying still in a pyramid. Elise looked really disappointed though. Lili didn't like that, and quickly strove to make it right.
"Well, maybe you can just take some off the top and place them along the outside, maybe?" Lili suggested, laughing nervously. "People are afraid of ruining it, that's all. Maybe setting out some other cases will encourage people." Lili eased her way into the stand's vicinity and reached up to gingerly remove one of the cases from the very top, effectively ruining any symmetry. But ah, such was a necessary sacrificed if Elise wanted a display that would still sell.
With that case of soda set down she reached up to pull another from its perch. "And there, you see? We just shave this down a block or two and we'll have plenty of cases to sell." But what was she saying? It wasn't as if she worked in this department - something that slipped her mind until Elise pointed it out. "Oh! I um, I was actually only my way to the pet department when I saw you standing there. I felt like I had to stop by and say hello!"
Well, hopefully he suggestion was a good one! It'd be awful to see all that hard work go to waste because no one was buying anything. If the soda continued to sell, who could blame Elise for just having a little bit of fun in the shop?

Alright, so maybe all her hard work was still salvageable. Lili was right, if she made it smaller the display would probably be better and people would actually buy some of the cases. Elise didn't want to get yelled at and she really had no more ideas so her suggestion was the best thing going right now. The best part was she would still have her castle, maybe not as big, but it would still be there. She would reign supreme in her kingdom of food. For this Elise would make Lili a lady of her court. Lady Lili of Produce.
“That seems reasonable. I'll just stack the excess in a square so people can just grab one off the top. When those are gone I'll make the display smaller and smaller until there's none left.” That was a perfect solution really. Of course she couldn't let her do this on her own and began taking down cases and stacking them beside it. This wasn't even her department and Elise felt bad for having the other girl helping her out.
Would it make her look bad if someone saw Lili helping her out over here? What if her supervisor said something? That wouldn't be good. As much as she appreciated the help she needed to fix this on her own. “I've got it Lili if you need to go, I don't want to make you late.” That seemed like a nice way of telling her to go, right? It seemed okay in her head. Elise really didn't want to be rude to the other girl, she seemed nice enough. Not that she knew any of these people all that well or wanted to, but she really didn't want to create conflict in the workplace.
Always end on a positive note, right? “Thank you for the suggestion Lili, I appreciate it.”

"Well, I do need to get going." Lili looked off to the side towards the pet department and frowned. It didn't look like any employees were there yet... but there were several customers. It would look very bad if she wasn't there to answer anyone or help. Turning back to Elise she began to politely excuse herself. "I'm sure one of the others will have an earful for me if I've not there in time to clock in." She didn't expect she'd be fired... it wasn't as if she was out getting drunk somewhere, not even at the store. Nope, simply helping out a friend who had the tiniest of problems in food.
"If you need any more help, or just want to talk, don't be afraid to pop in. Alright?" Lili offered, pulling one last case of soda off of the castle wall and setting it gently down on the floor with all the others. "And try not to make too many buildings while I'm away. You've made a fort, I'm almost expecting you to buckle down and make a village too!"
And then that would encourage small children to rampage through it like a monster. Eugh...
"Well, yes. I'll be going. I'll see you later! We should get together after work and go do something, yes?" Lili continued to speak as she backed away, and not waiting for an answer she darted off, noticing her free time was quickly running out. She'd expect a text from Elise later with some kind of answer.
