Likes:
Maple Syrup& Ice Cream
Two of Matthew’s favorite treats. The first comes from his upbringing in Canada. Maple syrup, the real kind was his Canadian gold. He put it on everything from sandwiches to his coffee. Nothing could taste bad to him as long as it had the sweet syrup on it. Ice cream the second of two evils is Matthew’s favorite comfort food. He’ll eat it when he’s happy, sad, angry, anxious, or more. The coldness reminds him of home, and the range of flavors never fail to curb any craving he could have, and don’t even get me started when he mixes the two together.
Hockey
Another warm reminder of his homeland. Matthew really misses it up there, but he’ll watch every hockey season religiously and sometimes rather furiously.
Animals
One Matthew’s softer spots are his love for animals big or small. Insect, spider, or bee he loves them all. At the apartment that he and Alfred share he keeps a Great Pyrenees named Kumajirou. Matthew forgets his name occasionally, but he loves him. Animals seem to be more in tune to him, and Matt appreciates that.
Learning
If there’s anything Matthew wants more than anything else, it’s to make something out of his life. He wants to become someone, and live his life comfortably. He also loves to stay educated and on top of new discoveries in the world. He loves to listen to teachers lecture him and watch documentaries on interesting and new things. Matthew is currently attending college as an undeclared major, and hopes he’ll figure out what exactly he wants to do someday.
Cooking
Besides loving food Matthew loves making it as well. Usually after he gets home from work he’ll whip something up for him and his brother. One the weekend he’ll try particularly complicated recipes, and sometimes they turn out well and other times no so much.
Reading
Sometimes wrapping himself in fantasy worlds is a getaway for him.
Dislikes:
Chaos
Matthew can handle the hustle and bustle of everyday business. It’s his job after all, but with things start to become disorderly, chaotic, and unruly he stops being comfortable. Matthew tends to shut down when things get like this, and he works his hardest to help people until the commotion has passed. He especially doesn’t like working the store during the holidays.
Bullies
Matthew won’t stand for it. Even if he sees a kid being taunted on the street, although he doesn’t like confrontation too much, he will risk it for them and step in. As a child in highschool he was constantly teased and taunted, as most demure children his age were. He won’t stand for it to happen to anyone else.
Uncleanliness
Is it too hard to be sanitary? Throw things away, keep floors swept, and clean the dishes. And even keep yourself clean. No one wants to smell you from a mile away. Matthew can’t stand being dirty, and often has a compulsive habit of washing his hands after everything he does.
Mistaken Identities
Being mistaken for his brother is a big no no in Matthew’s book. Don’t do it.
Being Unproductive
There are always things to do. Matthew can’t stand being idle. He doesn’t like feeling like he’s not useful in any aspect of his life.
Deep Fried Food
Matthew loves cooking don’t get him wrong. But dumping things in a vat of oil cannot be healthy, and the grease just isn’t appetizing.
Quirks:
“Eh?”
A famous quirk that’s for sure. Matthew lived in Toronto for a very large portion of his life with his Father. He was a tall thin man who worked in the white collar section of town. Most Canadians don’t say ‘eh’ surprisingly enough, but due to his long childhood in Toronto with his father Matthew picked it up from the area, and hasn’t been able to smother the habit ever since. Sometime people pick on him for it, but Matthew takes it all in good humour.
Winter Wear
Another interesting quirk tends to be Matthew’s winter wear. Usually when it start getting blustery and snowy outside he goes out to snowboard on the weekends. So sometimes on Monday mornings Matt shows up in thick or fleece coats and goggles to complete the look.
Fears:
Dropping Out of College
Matthew is irrationally afraid of going through his life without having any kind of knowledge, profession, or career. Matthew wants something to say he’s good at. Something to say he’s proud of. However, because of his split time between work, school, and home life Matthew is constantly terrified that he’ll lose his scholarships and have to drop out. He’s afraid he’ll spend the rest of his life as a dead beat who works at a superstore for a living.
Losing Alfred
It's a twin thing. Matthew, although he didn’t know Alfred until a few years ago, and dislikes him no less, couldn’t bear to lose him. It would probably be like losing the more obnoxious part of himself. Alfred is someone he needs to protect, because with the way he acts no one else will do it for him. Call it his twin instincts, but it’s what he has to do.
Personality:
Matthew Williams is a character of inexplicable two-sidedness, and the more you get to know the meek humble young adult the more he seems less like the person he was in the beginning. It isn’t really something he does on purpose, but rather the many different facets of his personality cloak others and leaves outsiders to see someone who is gentle and kind, but quiet and shy. Not quite perfect for the job of dealing with rowdy and obnoxious customers all day, but someone who will simply do. Matthew doesn’t really mind though, he fell into this job so many years ago, and leaving it could only be blasphemous to him now. He wasn’t really too fond of change anyway.
Matthew, he was that guy. The one no one really knew or noticed for that matter. He kept to himself, stayed in his corner of the break room and they usually stayed in theirs.Shy was what a lot of people used to describe him, but invisible is a better term. He craves to be noticed, but certainly does mind spending his work day thoughtfully musing to himself. When they do however, Matthew is nothing short of the poster child for a perfect gentleman. With his polite smile, carefully crafted words, and sometimes a little flattery Mattie can charm his way through a conversation. Of course he means what he says, but Matthew doesn’t really know what it means to have a heart to heart normal conversation. He does have a few friends within the store though, and slowly they’re getting to know more and more of him.
Still beyond conversing, Matthew is usually one of the few thoughtful employees at the store. Although he’s only a cashier Matthew is always doing little things around the store when it’s dead. Organizing and stocking shelves, sweeping floors, cleaning registers, and helping customers when it’s needed. He has the patience of a saint, and boy does he have to with his twin brother working in the store now. Not even the most irritating and ridiculous customer will break his calm. Even during rush hours for the store Matthew is able to keep himself level headed. He won’t allow himself to be caught running around like a chicken with his head cut off. As naturally Matthew is patient and calm he is also helpful and kind, he often does above and beyond what is expected of him as an employee, and if he knows the person he’ll pretty much generously do anything within his power for them. He likes to see his friends happy, and usually he could also be happy as well with this relationship. However; something within him clicked over when his brother was hired on to the store. Some of his less desirable traits started showing up.
The Canadian usually doesn’t express anything beyond the well-mannered and patient facade he usually keeps up at work. He really doesn’t want to lose his job. However, when he got a job for his twin brother Alfred just a few days ago things started to hit rough patches. His job had really been his quiet time away from his loud rambunctious twin, and he didn’t know why he had even offered to get him the job in the first place. He wondered why the thought had even crossed his mind. Ever since he’d not yet had a single moment of peace. He was beginning to feel overworked and irritated. Even angry and Alfred had only been there a couple days. Although Matthew did usually feel these things the negative traits he harboured usually stay locked away in a corner of his mind until he got home, but when he did.Matthew probably could go a sentence without letting something sarcastic fly out of his mouth. He didn’t like socializing with his brother much, and if he was ever angry or upset Matthew preferred to do something passive aggressive like burn his precious burgers or replace his shampoo with hair dye. It wasn’t that Matthew hated his brother. He just…didn’t like him. Alfred didn’t know that of course. So maybe that maybe him a little bitter, and maybe he thought back when he didn’t have siblings. Not near him anyway, and how Alfred was someone he’d imagined was some great being before they met, and then he wasn’t. Maybe he was a little stuck on the past. Still strong and independent, but reminiscent. Still Mattie knew that Alfred was his twin and he had to take care of him, but that certainly didn’t mean that they had to get along.
Overall Matthew is still a good employee and never treats his customers badly. He stays the cheerfully silent and obliging Canadian, and only when his brother is around does that start to crack around the edges.
♕ DIDN'T MAKE SENSE NOT TO LIVE FOR FUN ♕
Roleplay Sample:Matthew pulled his jacket around him closer as they walked into the Department of Motor Vehicles with an uneasy look on his face. The quiet Canadian was usually uneasy, but today it was even more prevalent than the others. His twin brother trailed in behind him agitation and nervousness clear in his posture, but in a more anticipatory way. Today was his big day, and after three years of putting it off it seemed appropriate that he would finally to go through with it one morning out of the blue. Bursting through his bedroom door in a flurry of activity and excited chattering while he was still half asleep and unknowing of today’s main event Matthew agreed to let the American use his car.
Not that he even remembered that Alfred didn’t have his license at that point.
So about four hours and a prompt morning coffee later Matthew ended up here speaking to the woman at the front desk explaining that they needed to take the driving test. They were told to take a ticket and wait in line with everyone else. Which would begin the long a painful wait for them both. While Alfred could never stop fidgeting, Matthew always seemed tucked into himself while he was facing his imminent doom, or rather his car’s. He liked to observe, and stay away in the background until he was needed. Although, he wasn’t particularly keen on being ignored it happened when you were as soft toned as he.
Alfred’s fingers melody reached his ears and he gave him a teasing grin. “No pressure, but don’t crash my car okay? I need that to get to work.”
A second later Alfred’s number was called and Matthew watched him stand up in a tizzy of what may have been anxiety, but maybe he had only imagined it, because a second later he was strutting toward the counter in all his haughty glory. Like nothing in the world was bothering him. What a little bastard.
Matthew gave him thumbs up and a small smile as he sauntered back to the testing area. His brother was so bad at hiding things it was ridiculous. Sometimes he didn’t know why others never picked it up. It was a long wait sitting in that small uncomfortable chair, and painful one when he watched Alfred step into the driver’s side of his rickety Volkswagen and drive off with a puttering of starts and stops. Matthew remembered when he got his license here in the states. It wasn’t a crowning moment for him, but it did give him some freedom and at the time that was all he ever needed.
Something to let him go wherever he wanted whenever. That had been nice. Hopefully Alfred would get this chance too and Matthew would stop having to drive him places. After his quiet musing Matthew passed the time looking at the other nervous faces in the room. Mothers and fathers mostly looked this way while their children were all bouncing on their heels to get their chance. There white noise of the receptionist clacking away at her keyboard and that occasionally the snap of a picture kept Matthew from feeling too unnerved.
It was only a few minutes after that Alfred drudged through the back doors a peeved look on his face. They walked out to the car together before he finally spoke, and Matthew nearly choked on his Starbucks when he did. Commies? He laughed and gave his brother a light pat on the shoulder.
“Sure, communists, yeah.” The motorcycle comment caught his interest though. Alfred on something that dangerous? It was a thought that was daring to say the least. "It definitely sounds like something that's more your style."
