♕ FED TO THE RULES AND I HIT THE GROUND RUNNING ♕
Likes:
Art: Like most kids Maddie has a thing for colouring and painting and sculpting, anything craft related really. And once more she has the potential to be quite talented. Unlike most kids she also enjoys viewing art that other’s have made and can be quite the miniature art critic in at times.
Soft Toys: Not many people know about it but she has a small menagerie of toy animals in her bedroom. Her absolute favourite is her rabbit named Binky who was her constant companion when she was younger.
Comics/Manga: Although not strictly art Maddie still enjoys these illustrations and the stories that accompany them. There are several series that she actively follows and many more that are off again on again interests.
Cricket: This may seem like an odd hobby for a ten year old girl but thanks to her brothers Maddie has been able to play since before she could walk. Since moving from Australia she’s been trying to get a new cricket team going but with little success so far.
Ice Cream: Ice cream is the food of the gods and it’s made from milk so it is in fact good for you. Strawberry, Chocolate and Vanilla are Maddie’s favourites but she doesn't mind trying out new flavours if they come her way.
Games: Again, blame her brothers; they projected their interests onto her at a young age and from there it became her interest as well. There are several game series that she follows with devotion and she owns several portable consoles of her own with which to play them.
Dislikes:
Being Called Cute: The great irony of this dislike is that the more Maddie insists that she’s NOT cute the more adorable she looks. When she younger the “C” word would result in a tantrum but she’s now managed to concentrate her fury into a single well placed glare.
Boys: Maddie’s at an age where boys are gross and disgusting and probably evolved from a different planet. That being said if a boy does manage to meet her standards of hygiene, personality and loquaciousness she might decide to associate with him... might.
Childishness: Another irony considering that she can be quite childish herself, but Maddie has quite a scornful attitude to immature behaviour.
Bedtime: Plenty of kids don’t like being told to go to bed, and this kid is among their ranks. The more tired she is the more she will insist that she’s not. Illogical yes but I think we all remember when we were like that.
Being Patronised: Most people don’t like being patronised and Maddie is no exception. A lot of people become condescending when she tells them that she works at the store (being payed in art supplies) and this is a constant annoyance for her.
Spinach: It’s green, it’s icky and it’s a vegetable. Maddie doesn't care that its good for you, she thinks it’s disgusting.
Quirks:
She wants a Blue Tongue for her birthday
When concentrating she likes to tuck a pencil/paintbrush behind her ear.
Fears:
The Dark: She will never admit it but Maddie’s afraid of things that go bump in the night. She sleeps with a night light and is generally careful to never be in total darkness, but she still gets caught out on occasion.
Alien: One time her brother’s stayed up late to watch movies. Deeming it unfair that she had to go to bed while they didn't she snuck out of her room to see what they were watching. She was just in time to witness the infamous “birthing” scene from Alien. Result: Maddie is now terrified of the movie and all its sequels.
Personality: At ten the world still seems very much black and white but you have not yet become colour-blind to the wonders of life, and Madison’s (aka Maddie) life is very much in colour. She has a knack for sticking her nose everywhere it should and shouldn't be. Being one of those kids who follow you around endlessly firing questions to satisfy her own boundless curiosity can be a bit irritating for those around her at times.
Maddie likes to think that because she “works” at the store she’s quite mature for her age and tries to act as such. This includes pretending that she’s not scared of the dark, becoming bossy on occasion and insisting that she can do everything by herself, when this happens it’s best to humour her and let her carry on. Luckily Maddie’s pretty good at learning from her mistakes, she makes quite a lot of them.
Whilst seemingly confident in most things Maddie is very shy about her passion for art. Just about everyone who knows her knows that she paints but only those close to her know how much heart and soul she puts into getting a painting just right. She doesn't like others to know because she thinks that they won’t take her seriously. After all she’s only ten, when most people hear a ten year old say that they want to be an artist they don’t usually think she’s for real.
Even though Massie’s job consists mostly of running errands for the store keepers and giving directions to customers she takes her work pretty seriously. She understands how important a good work ethic is to keeping the store running smoothly and is proud the contributions that she’s made. The extra paints and brushes that make up her “earnings” aren't half bad either. One of these days she’s thinking of requesting a raise to include ice cream as well.
♕ DIDN'T MAKE SENSE NOT TO LIVE FOR FUN ♕
Roleplay Sample:Madison stood quietly to the side while her brother tried to sweet talk the irate manager that stood before them. So far he was doing terribly.
“Look I know it’s a little unusual but there’s no one else at home when Maddie get’s home from school and I’m sure you can understand how much I worry about...”
“This is a store Cook, not a day-care. Your little sister will have to...”
Maddie stopped paying attention to the conversation at this point. She knew that she could take care of herself, she was nine years old for crying out loud! But grownups didn't seem to think that this was big enough to stay at home by herself. She didn’t know why. After all the time that she got scared during the blackout had been two weeks ago, she’d grown up since then. No way she was getting caught out by the darkness again.
The sound of voices yelling came from nearby. Maddie turned around to see who it was and immediately wrinkled her nose. A group of boys about four or five years older than herself were fooling around inside the store and casually flinging insults to passersby. The other people in the store ignored the mob but Maddie could see that she was not the only one who was bothered by their noise. In fact the only ones who had apparently not noticed were her brother and the manager, they were too busy arguing.
Deciding to follow the grownups lead Maddie turned around again and instead focused her attention on a set of markers. She had first noticed them when they had walked into the store but her brother had said that he didn’t have the money at the moment. In fact he did have the money but he was saving it for something.
‘Probably for a date with someone’ Maddie though with a grimace. She was just considering asking her brother again when he and the manager were done with their “discussion” when something hard struck the back of her head with a “BONK!”
“Ow! That hurt!” Maddie cried out. The group of males howled with laughter and sent another rubber band flying her way, delighted in the disturbance they were causing. Any other child might have started crying at this point or (if they were smart) retreated behind one of the shelves so they were no longer presenting a target. But not Madison Zoë Cook.
“Why don’t you hoons pick on someone your own size!” The little girl marched up to the youths and reprimanded them with the authority of someone three times her age. “ What if you got me in the eye and I was blinded? Would you be so clever then? Where are your parents anyway?”
If she’d been older the guys in question would have jeered at her words and may have even retaliated with more rubber bands. But as it was some dregs of decorum that lingered in their psyche said that it wasn't cool to fire missiles at a person who was half your size, and a girl at that. So they shuffled round awkwardly and looked at each other to see what they should be doing in response to this scolding sprite.
Maddie had a lot more to say but at that point the manager who had previously been talking with her brother stepped forward and in front of her, effectively blocking her view. “I believe I agree with the young lady here. What you boys just did was dangerous and could have caused some quite serious damage. If you have nothing to say for yourselves I would leave the building now before I call security.”
The boys did jeer a little at this, but it was mostly to try and scrape back some dignity as they sloped off towards the store’s exit. The manager turned to look at Maddie. “I’m sorry about them, they've been a bother for a few weeks now. So you’re Cook’s little sister eh?”
“My name’s Madison sir.”
“That was a nice job you did with those kids. Quite brave considering how big they were.”
“Not really sir, it’s just the way I talk to my brothers when they’re being idiots.”
At this remark her brother blushed and the manager threw back his head and roared with laughter until his whole body shook with humour. He turned to look at her brother.
“Your sister has spunk Cook.”
“Yeah, she’s always been like that.”
The manager thought for a moment before reaching a decision “Alright, she can stay in the store during your working hours. Maybe if she’s in the store those dropkicks will avoid coming here. But she’d better be as good as gold, no horseplay you hear?” Maddie jumped when she realised that he was speaking to her.
“No sir.”Maddie gave a little bounce on the balls of her feet. She was thrilled that he was giving her a chance at, whatever this was... A job? “Am I working here now sir?”
The manager hummed in amusement “I don’t think so, if word got out that I was employing a minor we would all be sent down the drain. So no extra pocket money I’m afraid.”
“You could pay me in markers, my ones have dried out. Or even pencils.”
This time it was her brother’s turn to laugh.
