So there she was, going back and forth between departments like it was nobody's business! By this time she was effectively a pro at getting from one department to another in the least amount of time needed. She'd done it so many times. Initially she was a little worn down by constantly tending to both pets and flowers, but her workload in the latter section was pretty quickly lessened by Lars, who seemed to be inconspicuously giving her less to do, possibly to make life a little easier for her. She hated not feeling like she didn't pull her weight, but Lars didn't seem to complain too much. Sometimes taking care of animals needed a bit more time than flowers did. Sigh.
Today, though, she finished up with the animals early. For some reason most of the enclosures were already cleaned and maintained, perhaps some other employee, but she didn't check the logbook before leaving. Alright, so what to do today in the gardening section? She actually hadn't been here today! The logbook said the usual, 'water the flowers, restock what is needed." A small note to the side told her to go back through the plants and check them over, as a second opinion. Alright, easy enough. It amazed her how some people could get so much done on their own. Didn't Lars basically do the entire department himself the other day?
Goodness, that kind of efficiency she could only dream of! But maybe someday, Lili. Maybe someday!
And so, she suited up. Clips, bag; she eyed the pots on the other side of the establishment, unused and simply sitting there alone and without plants. She anticipated not needing them, actually... but it was good to know where things were. However, something happened that she expect! As she looked over a particularly stunning daffodil plant, a pot about two rows down slipped off the table and dropped to the ground, shattering upon impact. The loudness startled her and she squeaked loudly, pulling the daffodils close in case something happened to also knock it over. A scuffling movement darted out of sight, and carefully she placed the pot down on the floor (because it cannot be knocked off the table if on the floor, right?) and crept over. The figure that darted back into her sights was black and white, suspiciously well-groomed and... a rat!
This was a rat from their own pet department!
What?!
"Ah, no no no! Come back!" The rat escaped her attempts to grab it and darted into the safety of the forest of plants, deep in the center of the table where she could not reach. "How did you even get out!?" She called, knowing full well she would not receive an answer. Ah, what was she going to do? Call someone? Yes, that seemed the best course of action, but not before attempting to salvage the plant that had dropped to the floor. There wasn't much she could do for it but ensure that it was standing up properly and not pressed into the floor.
Alright, back to the front now, the desk had all the numbers. This was new! Agh, who let out one of the animals?! And if this rat was free, then who was to that there weren't others missing? Did the person who logged in work for the pet department seriously not bother to take inventory to make sure that everyone was accounted for? She groaned in frustration and went called the first number she saw at the top of the list - Beilschmidt - and stared at the lines of pots in case the rat tried to make its escape. She needed another pair of hands if she was going to catch this thing!
... no, wait, there it was! It had run out and forgot it was on the table, and now hung precariously by its little paws from the edge! Lili dropped the phone, thankfully having not dialed any numbers, and ran to save the rodent from falling! She caught it in her hands and held it securely to her chest, and it wriggled with both fury and fright.
"No, shhh, stop that. We're going to get you home." She whispered, stroking its fur comfortingly. She seemed to have dodged a bullet by the time she got back to the pet departments. The person who last logged time in the book was not someone she was familiar with, probably another shift or maybe even newer than she was, but she was thankful that no one, not even them, were around to see her struggling with the rat in her arms. Yet.
